Ottawa Valley All Terrain Vehicle Club Newsletter

June 2005

It’s not actually June yet but we have some important news so here it is !

News

Some items from the May 18 general meeting:

We discussed how we could improve participation for the "Fun Runs".  It was noted that there are four more such runs remaining on the schedule that do not have a trail maintenance or club meeting functions attached to them.  These are on the following dates:  May 28th, June 25th, Aug 27th and Oct. 8th  It was agreed that if each Fun Run had a purpose or destination associated with them that they would be better attended.  The very successful trail maintenance runs were used as proof of this.  Towards improving these runs, we got the following volunteers.

  1. J.C. Arbie – Date TBD, ATV Survival Course/Fun Run.
  2. Gary Munro, Chuck Dupuis - August 27th Fun Run, Fishing Day in Ompah area lakes.
  3. Dave Leighton - October 8th, Fun Run to Craig Lake

The following motion was put forward by the club Executive at the May 18th meeting, seconded by Patsy Bradley, discussed and voted on.

"Effective immediately, the "Founders" position is to become a purely honorary position with no functional responsibilities beyond those of a regular member and that the honorary "Founders" position will no longer be eligible to receive a lifetime paid membership."

Prior to the vote, there was much good, respectful discussion both pro and con.  Christie Bennett read a letter from her father who was unable to attend.  Following the discussion, each member voted via ballot.  The votes were counted by Steve McCoy, Mike Devereaux and J.C. Arbie.

The motion passed by a vote of 17 for, 2 against, 0 abstained.

Following the passing of the first motion, a second motion was immediately constructed by many of those in attendance and seconded by Rick Walker that read as follows:

"The OVATVC recognizes Neil Bennett as the Founder of the club and, in that regard, will waive that portion of the membership fees that are retained by the club as long as he remains a member of the club."

This motion passed by a vote of 19 for, 0 against, 0 abstained.

We also agreed that the club should get a plaque and present it to Neil recognizing his role as the Founder of the club.

Charity Run

We have an organization Committee:

Lead - Patsy Bradley

Assistants:  Mike Devereaux, Gary Munro, Chuck Dupuis.

If you’d like to help in please contact Patsy at (613) 949 5989(w). Thanks to all for this.

Parking Spot

Patsy Bradley has kindly offered to let club members park on the Bradley property near Ompah. We will be using this as the starting point for the overnight run June 11 and 12.

The Bradley's

1018 Folger Road

(613) 479-5511

The written directions are:

From 509 you can either take:

 - Lavant Road, turn left onto Cruise Road and follow to the end.  At stop sign you will see big white house with round steel garage - that's it.

- Canonto Road - stay on it.  Canonto Road turns into folger Road.  You will come up to a 4 way intersection (but only a 3 way stop).  Roads are Canonto/Folger and Cruise/Chatham Elliot.  The house will be on your left (as described above)

If coming from the 511 and travel through Poland, Lavant Station, etc., then you will take your normal route to Ompah, only on Lavant Road turn right onto Cruise Road and follow to the end.

Lanark County ATV Road Use Status

Efforts to get the County of Lanark and the Townships within Lanark are “dead in the water”.  They simply won’t do it despite all the reasoning in the world with them that I have done.

If you care get a hold of your elected councilor within Lanark and let them know what you think.  They work for you!

Getting North Frontenac to Recognize the EOTA Pass

Cindy of the EOTA and I met with NF council again on April 6th.  The mayor and most of the councilors were impressed by the presentation.  If this does go ahead it will be in place for the ’06 riding season.

EOTA

The new EOTA maps should be out at the end of May.  Pick them up at any club meeting or run from June on.

The EOTA trail system has now expanded to include new trails in Renfrew.  This will be reflected in the new trail map.

The EOTA is now working with groups in the Lake St. Peter area to get their trails into the system.  Stay tuned!

EOTA and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs

If you are a sledder and intend to buy and OFSC permit this coming winter, save your pink trail pass slip!  It will enable you to get the EOTA portion of your pass for only $50 through an agreement the EOTA has struck with the OFSC.  You currently pay $60 for the EOTA portion of your pass.

DETAILS                       The expedition will depart the Ompah area and proceed along the E Top snowmobile trail until we reach Hwy 41.  A 6 Km detour along a paved road will be required due to a portion of the trail being closed.

From Hwy 41 we will travel on some local snowmobile trails and logging roads with another 6 Km portion of semi-paved back road.

We expect to arrive in Bancroft around 5:00 PM on the 11 June with a 08:30 departure from Bancroft on Sunday 12 June (this will include a stop at Tim Horton’s on the way out of town).

As my wife will be meeting us in Bancroft with my truck, I can take everyone’s overnight bags and a couple large coolers or a few small coolers (please coordinate with others).  It is not a good idea to carry any alcoholic beverages on the trial as the OPP may give you some trouble.  The beer and liquor store close early in Bancroft and we may not make it there in time.

TRAIL                           Approximately 150 Km each way.  There is a gas station half way however they only sell premium gas.  It’s a good idea to bring the fuel you need for entire one-way distance.

The route is generally easy riding on logging roads and trails, however there are a few more challenging areas with some mud, rocks and water.  I think most members, experienced or novice will find this an interesting and enjoyable route.  Depending on the amount of rain, there could be very dusty areas so ensure you have goggles and a dust mask.
